Translated or tailored CV? How to position yourself for international jobs

Looking to work abroad or apply for a remote position? You’ll need a CV in English, German, French, or another language. But be careful: a simple translation is not enough.

 

What works in Romania might seem confusing or unprofessional elsewhere. The real challenge isn’t translating words — it’s adapting your content to global job market standards.

 

What you should know when translating your CV:

  • In Germany, it’s standard to include your birthdate and photo. In the UK or USA, this is considered unprofessional.
  • “Șef birou achiziții” shouldn’t be translated literally but adapted to “Procurement Manager” or “Head of Purchasing.”
  • Saying “I coordinated” means little without details — how many people? what results?
  • Education must be culturally adapted — not “Bacalaureat,” but “High School Diploma” or “A-levels,” depending on the country

Other important items:

  • Cover letter – must be adapted to international expectations: direct, specific, results-oriented
  • LinkedIn profile – a bilingual or localized profile boosts visibility to foreign recruiters
  • Portfolios – must include clear descriptions in the target language
